For grins, because I enjoy novelty, and because I’m a glutton for punishment, I on-boarded myself to CachyOS on an old laptop. Device support is fantastic. I kept myself inside my Gnome desktop environment comfort-zone, and have been spending a lot of time with Google to do things that take less work on other distros. For example, secure boot is probably now more secure than on any previous Linux install, but I needed Google to find out generally what to do–then translating it to the real world and my specific device. We got there.

I will say, based on the support of x64_V4, this laptop has probably never been faster. It’s an elder Intel i5 with 8Gb of RAM and it runs so much better than it did with Windows 10 or 11.

I will not be any kind of developer, but for media consumption and a little writing, it’s just great.

\n

I will suggest the from a set-up point of view, this was not something I’d recommend as a first or beginner Linux experience. Your mileage may vary.

I was interested in kernel optimizations and a rolling release and that is definitely what I have.

When I change to a standing desk, I’m more apt to start walking when I’m ruminating. No destination in particular, but I have to pick one when I notice. Sitting in a cube farm at work, the behavior is not invisible.

Once upon a time, I was given a first gen iPad with cellular. That thing quickly became one of my favorite tech devices and I carried it with me pretty much everywhere for no good reason. Ever since then, I’ve wanted an iPad that had the same capabilities as an iPhone.

I was super excited to get an iPhone 6+, because I thought certainly the larger screen meant apps more like the iPad. But, no. All the exact same stuff over some extra pixels.

\n

I was also super excited to get an Apple Watch. I’ve worn one every day since Series 4. I opted in for Wi-Fi and Cellular. Once again, I had hoped to ditch the phone. Again, I was disappointed to learn that the watch can’t do much on it’s own and is effectively an accessory and secondary screen for the phone.

\n

I like the unfolded form factor of the new iPhone Duo, I like the ability to use a stylus on a phone screen, finally. I like the screen size. I like that it has window management.

\n

But honestly, I hate that it folds.

\n

I dunno. I feel like I should be more grateful that this combination of features exists at all. If I have the opportunity, I will probably get an iPhone Duo.

\n

But I’d really like an iPad Pro that will allow voice calls (I carry AirPods Pro) and allow me to pair my watch.

I had really hoped more for phone features in an iPad, but the iPad features in a phone is compelling. I won’t be able to swing a gen 1 or 2 from a price standpoint, but if the reviews remain positive, iPhone Duo could condense my daily carry.

I’d say the largest portion of my tech support role is to make technology tools actually perform the work they are designed for. I use the word “coax” a lot. But I’d suggest a good second portion of my work is noticing and correcting adjacent and related issues.

Today I found that a network printer in a walled office had been plugged into a jack that formerly was used by a laptop docking station. The docking station network cable was not removed, just left hanging from the dock—unbeknownst to the office occupant, whose laptop was on Wi-Fi. Could be worse, but should be better. I went to grab a small, unmanaged switch to enable a second LAN connection in the office, but subseqently observed a second network port right next to the first.

A quick trip to the network closet revealed that the port was already cross-connected to a network switch, so simply plugging in the hanging cable into the second port was all that was necessary.

I am sometimes so disappointed. I try to understand what and why and I just can’t. I like to believe the people I’m working with are not just trying to close a ticket, but also trying to prevent more calls. Evidence suggests I am wrong.

Got the opportunity to plug in and play an XBOX series X, yesterday. Spent several hours with a new Hogwarts Legacy character. I’ve played many dozens of hours on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. I was surprised that there is so much more visual detail and terrain detail, comparing between platforms. I knew the Nintendo port required almost an additional year, but now I know why.

\n

Then I thought I’d check out Minecraft. I bought the stand-alone game because I wanted to ensure that it didn’t fall out of availability from Game Pass.

\n

But then, I wanted to play my Minecraft Realm world. And even though I’ve had a Realm for years and haven’t needed Game Pass to connect from my Nintendo Switch or my Windows PC, I had to subscribe to Game Pass for the ability to connect the XBOX. The option is visible but you can’t use it until the subscription is live. So I do have Game Pass for the moment, but grudgingly. At the base level, I don’t know that I need cloud game play, but 5 hours per month seems ludicrously low.

Maybe Microsoft’s practices are the reason I got my current unit the way I did. The console’s capabilities are impressive, coming from the Nintendo universe, but I don’t know that Microsoft has endeared me the way that Apple and Nintendo have.

I get such a kick out of articles online describing non-Apple products as competitors to Apple products. Once you have had an experience, it’s going to set a bar. It’s going to change how you evaluate additional experiences. You don’t have to like what Apple does, ever. You don’t have to like retail prices. But if you’re comparing products, they are going to influence you.

Trying out Atomic desktops. Bazzite and Silverblue are pretty easy, coming from Ubuntu and Gnome. I read about the Cosmic desktop environment and have decided to give that a shot. Atomic desktops have forced some relearning of habits, and Cosmic is good but I wouldn’t say I love it, today. I’m not a developer, just a curious person and hobbyist. I support Windows, MacOS and iOS professionally–so I have opinions.

I have made it an imperative to keep myself agile in the sense that I can do most things I like no matter what operating system is in front of me. There are some things inside of the Apple ecosystem that I do prefer every bit as much as I prefer Apple Hardware. But I have to say that being able to run a reasonably secure OS and modern applications on a modern kernel on hardware that isn’t supported any longer from the commercial operating systems is pretty lovely.

Oh, also trying a rolling release: OpenSuse Tumbleweed. I like the speed they incorporate Linux kernel updates. I already have kernel 7.2 running there.

\n

Mind you, I’m not running production services on these personal laptops. Firefox, Edge (for when I have to do something work-related, I can set up and use profiles), Discord, 1Password. All of these have flatpak installs.

\n

I do have a project in mind to migrate my Windows-based Plex server to Linux, but I want to build that in parallel with my current machine so that I’m not down while I bring the new machine up. It’s looking a lot like there are good Linux versions or substitutes for MakeMKV, Handbrake, and ExactAudio Copy. I feel I can support my current habits without major news expenses on equipment or software.

There is a long chain of events including cultural appropriation and colonization, but, following the arrow of time, essentially the English weekday names are derived from practices begun in Babylon.
