Daim is one of my favorite things, ever.

Does anyone use their XFinity box for HDMI source switching?

#

Troubleshooting an AV system is easily as vexing as anything else in technology. I did get my system working again, though.

My receiver isn’t new enough to do HDMI switching, but it does have optical-in. So, right now, my TV does the source switching and sends audio to the receiver over the optical link.

I noted the XFinity box has mutiple inputs. Has anyone used the cable box for AV switching and if so, how did you like the results?

Beauty in the Dark

My taste in music is unconventional. People have been telling me for a very long time that music that moves me is wierd or hard to enjoy. This saddens me deeply, so I am giving you that out before you read this or anything else I write about music.

Today I am all about Recoil’s 2000 album, Liquid. I am a big fan of the spoken-word delivery of most of the tracks, and a big fan of the electronica that is the basis of it all—though in the style of music it is most certainly a product of its time. The staccato percussion and the deep, groovy bass is a wonderful counterpoint to the smooth, stylish, and sometimes whispered vocals.

I went to check the wikipedia entry for the album release date and was astonished as I had forgotten about all of the collaborators who contributed their art.

My favorite track by far is called Want. It features words written by performance artist or “broken word” performer Nicole Blackman. It speaks of desire, but reaches deeply and frankly into our darkness. It gives voice to thoughts we might otherwise chase away.

In 2010 Recoil released remixed versions of Want and Jezebel from the Liquid album (which thrilled me to no end) as well as an arresting video set to my favorite remix version. The video has a compelling narrative of its own, which is not about the lyric, but which comes from the same dark territory.

If you can find beauty in the darkness, you may really love the tracks. If I’ve lost you, I’ve probably really lost you.

Sometimes You Already Have the Tool You're Looking For

Today I learned, or maybe I relearned, that the reason there aren’t Word or Excel templates for an hourly look at your week’s schedule is because Outlook offers that as one of the ways to print your own calendar.

On the Mac, I found the version of the weekly calendar from the Calendar app to be superior to the wierd, unfinished output in the first-ring version of Outlook 2016 I’m running there.

My quest was driven by my newish habit of carrying a dot-grid notebook. With it, I’m doing much better at task capture than without it. And,yes, I know: there are a thousand so-called Bullet Journal (BuJo) bloggers and vloggers with lots of decorative and/or practical layouts I could draw trace or tape into my journal.

But, if, instead, I can simply print from an application I have open all-day, every-day, then I feel like that is a win.

It would be more perfect if I could print on A4, but I will take what I can get.

Yesterday’s strange state apparently brought on by lists of names in a spreadsheet and a brain primed to make associations.

For some reason today I’m remembering events from decades ago of statements I’ve made that were hurtful to people.

I would like to believe I would choose differently, today.

But life is complicated, and maybe the eventual outcomes may not have been better.

iOS 12 Public Beta Is Available

#

I’ve installed developer and public beta iOS releases from iOS 3 to 11. I have never really had a “Test” device though in recent years I have leveraged the fact that I carry a phone for personal use and one for work.

I may eat my words, but I think I am going to sit this release cycle out—knowing full well I’ll install iOS 12 on the day of release.

Pro-Tip

I could not get OwnYourGram to work until I created an account on GitHub that pointed back to my Micro.Blog URL, then added that GitHub username to my account in the account settings on Micro.Blog.

After that it was like butter.

Words, and Writing Them Down

#

Picking which idea gets written first is a tricky proposition. I close my eyes and listen to them recite themselves over and over. Some lead to more ideas. Others stand alone starkly or awkwardly. Some seem ridiculously and unnecessarily revealing. Or mundane. Or grandiose. Vain. A trope. My internal editor red-lines most everything, anymore.

However, I still crave writing and returning to the habit.

Baby steps.
